The Late Summer
School 2020
With Alan Kitching & Kelvyn Smith
A two day course I did learning about wood letter, metal type and letterpress materials. I felt incredibly privileged to be able to attend this course. It was a great pleasure to watch Mr Kitching make his famous prints. He would craft these things of intricate beauty, print them and then put his tea down on them, casual is the artist used to his own work. I learnt a lot about the origins of typography and the intimate and detail-heavy art that comes with it. It provided context to my own work with type and letter forms and reminded me of the joy of physical work again. The beauty of the letters, their design and production has become more pronounced through this process. I learnt how the letters corrode over time and how they interact with the printing process because if this, something I loved as it provided happy accidents and the charm of handmade products. It felt good to be back in a studio after the isolation of covid, dirty hands and the smells of ink and paper and metal.
